Policies and Expectations

Lesson Schedule

Lessons are conducted during school term time according to the Victorian School Calendar.

Lessons are only conducted on weekdays. Lessons will not be conducted on School Holidays, Public Holidays or Long Weekends, unless via special arrangement on a case-by-case basis.

Tuition fees cover: time spent with student, preparation, travel, materials, software/app subscriptions for teaching etc.  Some materials such as books and music can be purchased through me, which will be added to your fees.

Fees are payable as per your individualised schedule.

I like to use a diverse range of materials in lessons. I will usually source all materials, which can be purchased at retail price, or you can source materials yourself. Payment for materials can be made along with tuition fees, or upon receipt.

Materials and/or instruments/equipment borrowed from me must be cared for, and returned in an acceptable state. Consideration is taken for reasonable wear and tear. Damaged items will incur a replacement fee.

Missed Lessons

Missed lessons due to forgetfulness, illness or holidays are not refundable, unless ample notice is provided. If 24 hour notice is provided, a make up lesson can be scheduled, or a credit applied to the next fee cycle.

If I’m sick or otherwise unable to attend a lesson, I’ll endeavour to reschedule, or credit to the next fee cycle.

If you wish to finish lessons, please provide at least 4 weeks notice by text or email. Students will continue to receive the lessons they’ve paid for until the end of the fee cycle when the termination will take effect. Refunds will not be issued, and payment for the 4 weeks is payable.

Media Release

To help promote my business, and to create a sense of community among my students and families, I have an online presence on Facebook (Tom Kelly Music Tuition), and Instagram (@tomkelly.musictuition), where I will post pictures and videos of what my students are achieving.

Students will only be identified by their first name, or an agreed upon alternative (initials etc). If you would not like your child’s image to be used online, please let me know in writing.

Commencement of lessons is deemed acceptance of these terms.

What to expect from lessons

Music lessons provide students with skills and knowledge that can stimulate and challenge, and also be fun and rewarding. But, as with most other endeavours, it requires a certain level of commitment and dedication.

From Me

I aim to give you or your child a comprehensive education in music. Students will be exposed to a wide range of music, styles and creative endeavours. All lessons are created to suit the individual goals, desires and loves of each student.

I encourage my students to be curious and creative. I show students how music is constructed and how they can make up their own. I help students learn music that they want to learn. I develop their reading and technique.

Students will learn a large amount of repertoire and enjoy a broad education that suits their level and goals for the future.

From You

Students are responsible for being prepared for lessons, with books and music ready by their instrument, and having completed their practice. Students should practice to achieve goals, not to fill time and it is expected that all instructions are followed week-to-week.

Set yourself goals, and work to achieve them. You’ll be amazed how good it feels!

A general practice session might look like this:

Warm-up    –   scales, exercises, sightreading, review

Pieces        –   learning new pieces, perfecting old pieces, specific goals

                 Theory        –   homework, composing, research

Cool-down  –   review, play through pieces
